How your compliance date is set
Every vehicle in the program has its own compliance deadline derived from its DMV registration month. Testing must be reported through the Clean Truck Check Vehicle Inspection System (CTC-VIS) before that date — not after it.
How often testing is required
- Semi-annual — the current standard for most heavy-duty vehicles.
- Annual — available to some agricultural vehicles and California-registered motorhomes.
- Quarterly — arriving in October 2027 for vehicles with on-board diagnostics, typically 2013 and newer engines.
What happens if you miss it
A missed report is not a quiet failure. CARB can issue monetary penalties, and the DMV can place a hold on your registration renewal — which takes the vehicle off the road far more effectively than any fine.
The fee is indexed to the Consumer Price Index, so the exact amount changes year to year. Budget for the increase rather than last year's number.
